coming. the last time the oakland police department actually had a class of new officers go through the academy, graduate, get their badge and hit the streets, that was in 2008, while oakland's crime problem keeps going up. today 38 new police officers got their badges here in oakland pinned for the first time by chief howard jordan. the numbers are sobering. right now oakland has 611 officers on the street. so this brings that number to 649. police chief howard jordan has said he'd like to have 1,000 officers helping to bring crime down. these new officers have been in the academy for about six months and will eventually be part of a new crime fighting strategy. chief jordan announced, of neighborhood policing. one of the biggest complaints is calling in a crime and not getting the reaction they hoped for. he said the new officers will help that and boost moral. >> we're not out there alone and city made a long-term commitment to staffing the department. it will help the citizens of oakland, one of the complaints we generally get is the response time, how long it takes for an officer t

state's bars and liquor stores. >>> the state dropped a case again a thief who hit the oakland museum clearing the way for federal charges. a federal complaint was filed against this man, andre franklin on friday. police say franklin stole a gold rush era jewelry box from the open museum january 9th. it was worth more than $800,000. he's also expected of stealing gold nuggets and gold rush era pistol from the museum on november 12 but has yet to be charged. >>> we can tell you there's a new plan for the lafayette hillside where thousands of crosses stand marking the lives lost in the wars both in iraq and afghanistan. jeev heaton, he's the man that started that memorial when the war started back in 2003. right now there are 4,000 crosses on display. but if there was more room, there would be 6701 for each american killed in iraq and afghanistan. heaton says the crosses will be removed when the soldiers return. he tells nbc bay area he hopes the hillside will then be use to house veterans. >> ultimately we could try to get permission to put veteran housing at this location, which i thi

more tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. reporting live in oakland, kristi smith, nbc bay area news. >>> new video into the newsroom now where the scene of an accident where a garbage truck hit a grandmother and a 7-year-old girl. this happened in san francisco along the embarcadero near broadway around 7:00 this morning. the girl was put inside an ambulance with her leg in a splint and her neck in a brace. the grandmother was also taken to the hospital. their injuries are considered to be nonlight threatening, though. police cleared the scene within an hour. about 20 people are without a home this morning after an overnight fire ripped through their apartment building. this all happened in the bay view district at 3rd and mckinnon. take a look at these flames. officials say the fire kept spreading and just became too tough to contain because of how close the buildings are. it took crews a few hours to finally control the fire. neighbors say an explosion woke them up about 1:00 a.m. >> i went to the front room and i seen the fire trucks. i went to my son's bedroom, which is in the middle. i

an oakland rapper on the las vegas strip which ultimately caused a big fiery crash will be in a los angeles courtroom today. ammar harris will attend an identification hearing, asking prosecutors to improve he is ammar harris before they can extradite him. it's not exactly clear who will be testifying at today's hearing. police say harris shot and killed oakland rapper kenny clutch cherry after a fight back on february 21st. >>> happening now, an urban village built on the grounds of an historic racetrack in san mateo is opening its doors. the bay meadows development includes almost 1,200 new homes, as well as office and retail space and 12 acres of parks and gardens. it's built on the bay meadows horse racetrack which opened back in 1934 and then closed in 2008. san mateo city officials are dedicating the bay meadows community park right now. the development officially opens to the public on saturday. >>> meteorologist christina loren joining us now. i guess it's no secret that winter is going out just with a beautiful bang. >> beautiful bang. and go figure, we're going to bring wi

, oakland police wrapping up a major sting operation, arresting at least a dozen people believed to be responsible for a list of shootings and homicides. police cruisers and s.w.a.t. vehicles lining the streets of neighborhoods this morning as police and other law enforcement agencies serve search warrants. the raid started before dawn. and authorities say they arrested a total of 12 people and seized one ak-47. oakland police chief howard jordan says the efforts have required a lot of teamwork. >> in addition to all of our federal, state and local partners that have joined us today, we have commitments from them to be here as long as necessary so that they can help us reduce violent crime in oakland. >> police say their work is not done. they're still looking for seven more suspects who are expecting to learn more in a press conference coming up expected to happen at 11:00 this morning. >>> in the south bay a large homeless encampment is being forced to move out this morning. police and city crews showed up a couple hours ago to start cleaning up the area. but many people who were liv

background checks and no more than 15 children to each care provider. >>> oakland police department working on a new way to help fight crime. the department today talking about a plan to redistrict, switching from the current format of two police districts just to one, made up of five smaller districts. the first would be in east oakland. should be in place by saturday. each district would then be managed by two separate police captains who would be responsible for community outreach and officer deployment. they would ultimately report to the chief. the department feels this the best way to deal with crime, especially considering its limited number of officers. >>> on friday the faa will let us know which airport control towers will close. there could be some bay area names on this list. the closures are in response to the sequester cuts by the federal government which slashed about $600 million from the faa. the affected towers will be at airports with fewer than 150,000 flights or 10,000 commercial operations per year. control towers in napa, concord, livermore, stockton and santa rosa ar
